European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development - EAFRD

The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) is part of a suite of funding opportunities available for agricultural and rural businesses. It is part of the wider Rural Development Programme which will also run from 2014-2020.

Funding opportunities will be announced through a series of calls:

Rural Development Programme 2014 to 2020

Local partners have been working with DERFA to help shape the new Rural Development Programme. It is important to recognise that the funding available is significantly less than Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly received in previous rounds.

The Rural Development Programme is a national programme, but with some limited tailoring to meet local needs. Whilst the programme has yet to be finalised we do know the following areas will be supported:

European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development

The EAFRD programme will seek to reflect the importance of the Agri-food sector in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. At present the planned activity to be funded under this activity includes:

  • Agri-tech – an investment in research that underpins a vibrant and productive agri-food sector with a particular focus on ruminant animals and speciality crops. Launch date tbc.

  • Renewables and Energy Storage – a grant programme to support innovative renewables (Not those which are eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive or Feed in Tarrif) and energy storage technologies. Launch date tbc.

  • Food Enterprise Zone Supply Chain Development Project– an investment in activity to promote productivity improvements in the agri-food sector and develop short supply chains. Launch date tbc.

  • Investment Grants for businesses – a grant programme for businesses looking to add value to primary agricultural and forestry products, farm diversification, etc. Grants are likely to range from £35k to £500k in most cases and the first tranche of activity is thought to be targeted at adding value to primary produce. A June 2015 launch date is planned.

  • Rural and Farm Tourism – an investment in projects designed to increase the value of the tourism sector. Launch date tbc.

  • Broadband – an investment in technology to deliver broadband up to 100% connectivity, this is unlikely to start until 2017.
