Porthloo Slipway & Boatyard
The Porthloo Slipway & Boatyard project consists of building a new concrete slipway into the sea at Porthloo, improving hard standing and storage for boats, creating better facilities including toilets, services and sumps for waste oil, and improving access to the boat sheds themselves.
St Mary’s has one boatyard located about 0.5 miles outside of High Town at Porthloo Beach.
This boatyard comprises a diverse mix of marine businesses ranging from boat building to marine engine maintenance. Despite having the largest fleet of commercial boats in operation in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly other than Falmouth, the lack of a permanent safe slip and associated infrastructure at Porthloo means that currently a large number of the commercial boat operators on the island need to travel to Falmouth. This is costly to the businesses in terms of time and fuel, and also increases the carbon footprint of the Islands.
