Smart Cornwall Business Development Team
The investment in the Smart Cornwall Development Team will maximise the significant opportunities of the emerging smart energy and services market for the economy of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Smart Grids provide a new type of electricity network which can respond to peaks and troughs in generation and demand, reducing the need for costly grid reinforcement. Currently energy flows from suppliers to consumers. A Smart Grid network will enable a two way flow of energy and information, through the interaction of a responsive ICT platform; a key aspect of Smart Grids is the ability to improve the efficiency, resilience and responsiveness of the current grid. Smart Grids allow for greater amounts of renewable electricity feed in points i.e. from photovoltaic panels on building roofs and wind turbines which, by their very nature generate variable levels of electricity. This will expose and eliminate waste and inefficiency from the system, empower consumers to interact directly with the grid and increase capacity through more efficient power production and delivery.
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are uniquely placed to take a globally leading role in the development of this $220bn (by 2020) global industry. This is a result of the ‘need’ as outline above, our engaged communities and our ability to add value through the unique partnership which has been set up through Smart Cornwall.
The development of this new sector in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly offers an excellent opportunity to support the delivery of the ambitions as set out in the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership Strategy, as well as being closely aligned to the OP objective to ‘encourage sector development, in particular the growth of the environmental technologies sector to create a major new industry for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The Smart Cornwall Business Development Team, which this project will fund, will maximise the significant opportunities of the emerging smart energy and services market for the economy of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, through undertaking two core tasks:
1. Supporting the growth of local SMEs to capitalise on these opportunities.
This element of the project will provide direct support to local SMEs who have the potential for growth into this emerging market. To this end the following activities will be supported: -
Smart Cornwall Events
Smart Cornwall Communications
2. Supporting the development of the Smart energy and services market within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
This element of the project will draw these currently disparate organisations and opportunities together under a single strategic framework and delivery mechanism. To this end the following activities will be supported: -
Support to Smart Cornwall Steering Group
Promote international partnership development & corporate engagement
Development of Policy and Strategy
