Get Set For Growth awards ceremony

Get Set For Growth held its first annual event on Monday 17th November at the Bedruthan Steps Hotel in Newquay.

The event was to celebrate the work carried out over the last year to support businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and to give out the inaugural GetSet Awards.

In the year that this ERDF Convergenceinvested business support project has been running, the businesses assisted have amassed an impressive collection of statistics: collectively turning over £34m, employing 600 members of staff with 170 new people being recruited.

Together the businesses have secured a total of £1.7m of external funding.

Nick Hewer from BBC’s The Apprentice gave the keynote speech based on his experience in business and how he came to be Lord Sugar’s right-hand man.

Giving some insights into The Apprentice process and what the candidates go through, he also reflected on the key attributes of an entrepreneur gleaned from years working alongside Alan Sugar. Nick talked about the focus required to run and grow a successful business, a subject many in attendance know very well.

Delegates also heard from Dale Murray, Entrepreneur and Angel Investor. Dale co-founded Omega Logic in 1999 to take advantage of the emerging mobile phone top-up market before selling it in 2003 and becoming an Angel Investor. She talked about the lessons she learnt when starting and running a growing businesses hoping to inspire and help the businesses by sharing her experience about funding options for business growth and what investors are looking for.

Ernie Capbert, Brand Director of local company Finisterre  moved to Cornwall from the US to help launch Finisterre, a local cold water surfing company which is growing rapidly and about to launch a brand new store in London. Ernie talked about his approach to growing a business and its brand and how they had moved from a small start-up to the company they are today.
